Beyond Galle the island of Sri Lanka curves eastward and just five miles along this curve, the south coast beach resorts begin with Unawatuna, a pretty sweep of sand backed by a number of small, moderately priced hotels and restaurants. Here, you can snorkel or scuba dive over wrecks, or enjoy lazing on the palm-shaded beach or swimming [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] in the calm clear sea.
Weligama to Tangalla Bay
The name of the town in Sinhala means "projected rock", a reference to the rocks which form the coastline in the town area, which contrasts with the sandy beach of the surrounding areas. Since the end of the civil war in 2009 and the completion of Tsunami rehabilitation projects, Pasikuda has become a popular tourist destination amongst locals and foreigners this is because Pasikuda is known to have one of the longest stretches of shallow coastline in the world. In other words, people walk kilometers into the sea because the water is only a few inches deep and the current is relatively weak compared to the rest of Sri Lanka's coasts. Pasikuda is easily accessible from Trincomalle and Batticloa, both of which cities have star class accommodation.

Unawatuna
Hikkaduwa
Trincomalle, with its magnificent deep harbor, has for centuries been a magnet for merchants, adventurers and colonists. Although the town offers a number of interesting attractions, including a fort and the famous Hindu temple on a rock promontory above the sea, most visitors head for the legendary Nilaveli Beach, or the far less developed, though equally lovely, beach of Uppaveli.
Hikkaduwa, almost 100 kilometers south of Colombo, has long been known as Sri Lanka's most popular beach resort, famed for its surf and coral reef as well as its wide range of accommodation, food, fun and shopping. This is perhaps the only coastal region where that special holiday feeling dominates town, with shops selling resort wear, renting out bicycles, offering courses in scuba diving and selling all kinds of local souvenirs, batik fabric and jewellery. Today it's a favorite with the younger visitor and the vibrant nightlife also attracts young Sri Lankans looking for out-of-town fun and entertainment on the weekends.
Historically Negombo was famous for its cinnamon production during Portuguese & Dutch Period but it had declined after Dutch were defeated in 1796 by British. The Negombo Dutch for which was built in 1672 is situated near the shore however the Dutch fort is in bad shape today due to lack of maintenance.

Tangalla
Many people claim that the beaches around Tangalla have the softest sand and the safest sea along the entire south coast. Tangalla seems set to become the most exclusive of the beaches along the south coast, and offers a chance to scuba dive around the coral reef protecting its four kilometers of sandy beach, and to explore a couple of wrecks. You could also watch nesting marine turtles drag themselves ashore at night to [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] lay their eggs at Rekwalla.
