The Industrial Revolution was a pivotal phase in the evolving story of human civilisation, and Manchester was right at the centre [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] of it. Some historians say that the Industrial Revolution began when [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] the [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Bridgewater Canal reached Castlefield in July 1761. Pinpointing the exact point the revolution started is probably impossible, but there is no question that Manchester's textile industry was in a [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] league of its own.
In the 18th century, cotton spinning took place throughout north [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Cheshire and south Lancashire, and Manchester gradually developed into the single largest marketplace for cotton products on the planet, to the point that it became known as the Cottonopolis.
So what was it that allowed Manchester to position itself as the world leader in textiles? To a large extent, this can be explained by the climate and topography of the region. The elevated terrain and the damp, humid conditions in the [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] east [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] and north of Manchester turned out to be perfect for water-powered cotton mills. Quarry Bank Mill, which revolutionised the processes of cloth spinning and weaving, is a prime example. Before long, Manchester had become the world's leading distribution [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] centre for raw cotton, spinning yarn and finished textiles.
The success of Manchester's textile industry also fuelled the growth of other forms of manufacturing, particularly [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] production of the machinery that was used to process cotton, and production of the chemicals used to make dyes. Alongside this, Manchester's transport network developed significantly, facilitating the efficient distribution of both raw materials and finished goods around the country. The canal system was developed and a passenger railway between Manchester and Liverpool was built. During this time, Manchester also got its first telephones, and major advances in [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] fields including science and education were made.
Today, Manchester is a truly post-industrial city. The majority of its mills, factories and warehouses have been converted into offices, apartments or nightclubs, and the ubiquitous smog has vanished. Now, the creative industries are [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] pushing the city forward, with the historic Media City complex in Salford [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Quays marking a new chapter in Manchester's ongoing story.
